The Maharashtra government is introducing the ‘One State, One Registration’ scheme by April 2025, making property registration more convenient for citizens. This initiative allows property owners to register documents at any sub-registrar office in the state, regardless of the property’s location.
What Does This Mean for You?
Currently, buyers and sellers must travel to the sub-registrar office where the property is located. With the new system, you can visit the nearest sub-registrar office to complete the process—saving time, money, and effort. For example, a Mumbai resident selling a property in Pune can complete the registration in Mumbai itself at the sub-registrar office closer to their home.
Note that, online registration for first-sale properties by builders is already functional.
Key Features of the Scheme
Why This Matters
The new system eliminates the hassle of travelling long distances for property registration. This convenience has been widely welcomed by property owners and experts, who believe it will reduce unnecessary stress, and overcrowding at registration offices, and improve the overall experience.
Modernising Property Registration
The Department of Registration and Stamps is collaborating with the National Informatics Centre to upgrade its systems. The focus is on ensuring a seamless process while maintaining strong checks to prevent misuse and ensure transparency.
Looking Ahead
This initiative marks a significant step toward modernising property registration and providing a smoother, hassle-free experience for everyone involved. In our observation, the current registration systems are slow and often “down” due to technical issues causing delays in registration and piling up of work at the registration office. This is surprising in a country like ours, which is home to some of the world’s great technology companies. So, this change is long overdue, and kudos to the government for making this a priority.
